Volunteer Work Day
Big news, folks. We are organizing our first Volunteer Work Day this coming Saturday, July 31. This is your chance to lend a huge hand to the new store. Registration is at the bottom of the post. Please register so we know how much lunch to bring for everyone!
The first step to getting the store ready is demolition. Specifically, there are three non-structural interior walls that need to come down. We will be tearing out drywall, removing fiberglass insulation, pulling disconnected wire, scraping up linoleum, and if we can get the right resources we might even pull down some studs.
To participate, you must bring:
- Work gloves
- Close-toed shoes or boots with thick soles
- Long-sleeved shirt and pants that can take a beating
- Proof of medical insurance
Location, Location, Etc.
There’s more to a location than square footage. This week I want to preview the surrounding area. I’ll touch on landmarks, travel routes, and amenities.
Snacks
We did drinks, so this week we’re hitting snacks. There’s a lot of variety out there, so drop a comment to specify what your favorites are. The poll covers the broad categories.
Service With an Appropriate Facial Expression
Customer service ranked third in important things! Jeremy and I both have long and varied histories in customer service and other relevant fields. We’ve learned some good skills and also seen a lot of ways not to do it. Recently, we’ve had other experiences that have really built up our capacity for patience and conflict resolution. (We can totally show you our sweet resumes to prove we’re awesome, if you want.)
We have a particular philosophy of service, and that’s what this post will discuss.
Magic 2011 Launch for Charity
Magic: The Gathering 2011 launches this weekend, and for every 1,000 attendees to the launch parties Wizards of the Coast will donate $1,100 to Child’s Play. Launch parties are the weekend of July 16 (yes, this weekend).
Child’s Play is a charity run by the video game-themed webcomic Penny Arcade. Each year they raise several truckloads of money to buy games and books for kids in children’s hospitals around the world.
Our September opening goal puts us a little out of range to participate in the M11 launch, but we heartily endorse bringing gaming to bed-ridden children. If you’re in the Metairie area, BSI Comics on Severn Ave. would be our pick. Otherwise, try WotC’s store locator. Even if you’re not a big Magic fan, consider doing whatever’s required to count as “attending” to get those numbers up.
The Field of Battle
For this week’s poll we want to know where you pursue your activities of leisure (so long as those activities involve gaming). Would you play it in a store? Would you, could you on the floor? No wait, that’s not one of the options. Maybe you should just check the poll.
Hours
The second-highest voted important thing was staying open late. For this week’s preview, I thought we’d talk about store hours, and touch on scheduling and events. It’s not set in stone yet, but this will let you know our current plans and where our priorities are. So first up:
Store Hours (Probably)
| Tuesday – Thursday | Noon – 10 pm |
| Friday | Noon – Midnight |
| Saturday | 10 am – Midnight |
| Sunday | 10 am – 10 pm |
| Monday | Closed |
Hydration Preferences
After a pyrotechnics-filled weekend you’ve probably worked up a thirst. What do you take?
In-Store Gaming Space
This week’s preview focuses on the gaming space, which is currently tied for the #1 important thing in our last poll. I’m sure everyone’s curious, and the pictures don’t really do it justice. So let’s dig in to it.
